Eastside Track Team Finishes Second

Our Eastside High boys track did extremely well yesterday at Golden league finals. They finished second over all in the Golden League. Mr. Gomez had the following to say:

Our 2008 Golden League Champions from Eastside High School are: Dwayne Dickson, Michael Johnson, Davon Batiste, and Marcellus Golliday in the 4 x 100, Jasmine Smith in the high jump, and Steven Sims in the Shot Put.

The Following athletes will be representing Eastside High School next Saturday at Warren High School for the first round of CIF competition. The boys 4 x 100 meter relay team of Dwayne Dickson, Michael Johnson, Davon Batiste, and Marcellus Golliday, Dwayne Dickson in the 200m, Jasmine Smith in the High Jump and 100 meters, Justin Weaver in the 800 meters, Davon Batiste in the 200 meters, Steven Melena in the 2 mile, Bryan Jenkins in the Long Jump, Marcellus Golliday in the Triple Jump, Scottie Echols in the Discus, and Steven Sims in the Shot Put.

There were also many Eastside High School Records set yesterday at the meet. The following athletes broke school records yesterday: Justin Weaver in the 800 meters with a time of 2:02, Steven Melena in the 2 mile with a time of 9:55, Davon Batiste, Marcellus Golliday, Michael Johnson, and Dwayne Dickson in the 4×100 relay with a time of 43.86, Marcus Bonner, Dejohn Gaines, Davon Batiste, and Marcellus Golliday in the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:34, Bryan Jenkins in the Long Jump with a distance of 21′ 3 1/2″, Marcellus Golliday in the Triple Jump with a jump of 43′ 3 1/2″, Raquel Njoku in the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles.

A special congratulations goes out to Davon Batiste who ran the 200 meters in a good enough time to earn him a spot as the #2 freshman in the state of California.

Girls’ Softball Suffers Big Loss

Eastside’s varsity softball team got obliterated 15-0 against Lancaster High on April 17, 2008. Our JV did not fare very well, either; they also lost 15-0.

Take Me Out To The Ball Game

Our boys’ varsity baseball team played Palmdale’s boys on April 16, 2008, here at Eastside. The score was 8-5 Palmdale, although we lost, we played hard, and fought to the very end. This was the first game in a two-game series. The next game will be April 18, 2008 at Palmdale. Coach Mercier expects to win.

Total Domination

Eastside High’s Boys varsity track team dominated Quartz Hill High’s team, with a score of 86-50. Eastside won 13 out of the16 events, while Quartz Hill won only three, one of which we did not compete in, the pole vault. Along with the crushing victory, Eastside boys set new school records:

800m Steven Melena2:06; Shot Put Steven Sims 44’6”; Discus Scottie Echols 136’1”; 400m Daniel Williams 53.9; 100m Devon Batiste 11.1; 200m Dawayne Dickson 23.4; Long Jump Marcellus Golliday 20’10.5; High Jump Marcellus Golliday 6’3”; Triple Jump Lorryn Carter 37’8”; 1600m Relay 3:38 Dickson, Weaver, Batiste, and Williams; 400m Relay Johnson, Batiste, Dickson, and Golliday

Eastside Swimming Making a Splash

Swimming season is on its way.  Coach Negaard, along with Coach Clausen, is holding practices Monday through Friday at the Eastside Pool. Negaard is holding a mandatory parent meeting Friday, February 15th.  There are between twenty and thirty returning swimmers, and an expected twenty new swimmers. “Practices have been stepped up, and intensified from last year; this is so we can compete with the other schools,” Negaard stated. If you are interested, head over to room 201 and talk with Coach Negaard.

First Victory!

On Tuesday December 2, Eastside’s boys’ varsity soccer squad won its first match against Frontier High of Bakersfield. Miguel Gomez scored both goals in our 2-1 victory.

Run, Steven, Run!

Steven Melena finished 9th in division three of the CIF competition with a time of 15:40 for the three mile. His finish in the top 10 secured him a spot in the state meet.  The meet is in Fresno this Friday the 23rd.  Steven Melena is the only runner from the Golden League to make it to the final round.

Tennis Season Ends

Coach Poland took his girls’ tennis team to the CIF qualifying match on November 1, 2007 at Antelope Valley High School. Kamillia Martinez made it to the second round, advancing further than any other girl on the squad (singles and doubles). Kamillia Martinez also scored the most points for the team during the season, scoring 24 out of 42. “The girls played their best and got some much needed experience,” Coach Poland stated.
